Learner Support
Here to Support Every Child’s Wellbeing and Progress.
Our dedicated Wellbeing and Progress Team are here to provide guidance, reassurance and practical help.

Our Wellbeing and Progress Team work with all of our students to remove any barriers to learning and to ensure learners’ Wellbeing is supported. They provide emotional support for a range of issues which include bereavement, anger management, mental health issues, self-harm and friendship problems.
Should your child need support, please contact the appropriate member of the team listed below. They can outline the support offered in school, discuss the referrals we are able to make and also signpost you to other external agencies, as appropriate. They are also essential when it comes to supporting and improving behaviour and relationships - they hold restorative meetings and are the key contacts between home and school should any issues arise.

Support for Young Carers
At Ysgol Gyfun Gwent Is Coed we are aware that some of our pupils are young carers. A Young Carer is a child under 18 who regularly helps to look after a family member or friend who is disabled, ill, has mental ill health or addiction problem.
Children may engage in:
Practical tasks (cooking, housework and shopping)
Physical care (lifting or helping someone use the stairs)
Personal care (dressing, washing, helping with toilet needs)
Managing the family budget (collecting benefits and prescriptions)
Managing medication
Looking after younger siblings
Helping someone communicate
When completing one or more of these tasks becomes a necessity, then we would classify a pupil as a young carer. Research suggests there are at least 800,000 young carers in the UK but many do not realise they are a young carer.

We know that young carers may need a little extra support to enjoy and do well at school. At Ysgol Gyfun Gwent Is Coed we are committed to ensuring that all pupils who are young carers are identified, and supported effectively.
We can offer additional pastoral support, small group workshops and access to opportunities outside school. We link up with the local Young Carers Service to offer our pupils more support both within school and outside of school.
At Ysgol Gyfun Gwent Is Coed we have a lead professional, Mrs Abigail Williams, who has responsibility for ensuring all young carers are able to enjoy school and make good progress. If you think your child might be a young carer, or could be affected by any of the issues we’ve highlighted, please let us know by contacting your child’s Leader of Wellbeing and Progress on their usual email.
Any information that is given to us will be treated sensitively and no information will be shared without your knowledge.
Restorative Practice at
Ysgol Gyfun Gwent Is Coed
Ysgol Gyfun Gwent Is Coed was established using Restorative Principles which are a cornerstone of our practice and way of being with learners and the whole school community. We believe that positive relationships are essential for the Wellbeing and academic progress of all and have received extensive training on this evidence-based approach. Restorative Practice underpins our Relationships, Restorative and Positive Behaviour Policy:
which was developed in conjunction with the Local Authority. We would encourage all parents and carers to consider and support these principles and to contact us to discuss further should you require more information. We have also included some articles and training slides here for your information.

Career Advice - Year 11
With many young people not able to physically shadow a business on work experience, students can gain an insight into a range of workplaces virtually from a simulation tool, a broad range of industry films and interactive worksheets. The activities listed in the link below encourage the exploration of a range of different roles and sectors, and help connect to the skills required, and the meaning of core transferable skills.
