Learning a language through immersion is an exciting challenge – here are a few key
points to consider as you begin your immersion journey and an outline of how you can
become fluent and improve your confidence
Who is it for?
Here at Ysgol Gyfun Gwent Is Coed we welcome learners in year 7 or 8 who have not previously attended Welsh-medium primary schools to undertake the exciting and challenging task of becoming fluent Welsh speakers.
What is it?
When joining us at Gwent Is Coed your first term will be spent in a small group setting with a dedicated teacher being fully immersed in the Welsh language. You will join your fellow pupils for registration, English and Physical Education.
What happens in immersion lessons?
The focus will be on speaking and understanding Welsh. Through role play, reading, writing, games, singing and lots of fun activities we will learn and surround you with Welsh while learning lots about Wales and our heritage. The aim is to have fun and learn together so that speaking, hearing and conversing in Welsh becomes second-nature.
What happens when after the immersion class?
Once you are confident and can speak and read Welsh fluently you will rejoin your year group and go to the full range of lessons. Targeted support will continue to be offered as you need and work will be differentiated appropriately as you begin to transition to your classes.
